Eric V of Denmark

Biography

Eric V was born on January 1, 1249, in Lolland, Denmark, where he would begin a life destined for the throne. As King of Denmark, he carried the responsibilities of leadership during a formative period in his nation’s history. His reign represented an important chapter in Danish medieval governance, though his time to leave a lasting mark would prove tragically brief.

On November 29, 1286, Eric’s life was cut short by violence in Finderup when he was fatally wounded by stab wounds. He was only thirty-seven years old at the time of his death, dying at a moment when much remained undone in his reign. His sudden and violent passing shocked the kingdom and left questions about the future of Danish rule.

Eric V was laid to rest at Viborg Cathedral in Viborg Municipality, where he was honored in death as befitted a monarch of Denmark. His burial place became a lasting memorial to his life and reign, and his tomb stands as a reminder of a king whose rule ended too soon.
