Eric II of Denmark

Biography

Eric II of Denmark was born on January 1, 1090, and came of age during a formative period in medieval Danish history. As a Danish monarch, he inherited responsibilities for governing his kingdom during the early twelfth century, a time when Denmark was establishing itself as a significant Nordic power. The exact location of his birth remains unknown to history, lost to the passage of centuries.

Eric II ruled during his era and maintained the Danish throne until his death on September 18, 1137, in Urnehoved Tingsted. His passing marked the end of a reign that had spanned the later decades of his life. The specific circumstances surrounding his death were not recorded, leaving future generations to reflect on his life through the broader historical record rather than detailed accounts of his final days.

Following his death, Eric II was laid to rest at Ribe Cathedral in what is now Esbjerg Municipality, Denmark. This burial place reflected the significance of his position and the respect afforded to Danish royalty. Today, his tomb remains a lasting connection to Denmark’s medieval past, and his reign continues to be remembered as part of the kingdom’s developing history during the early Middle Ages.
