Empress Dowager Cixi was born on November 29, 1835, in Beijing during a transformative period in Chinese history. Her life would span nearly seven decades, during which she became one of the most influential figures in late imperial China. From her beginnings in the capital, she rose to a position of extraordinary significance within the imperial court and the nation itself.

Cixi passed away on November 15, 1908, in the Imperial City, leaving behind a legacy that shaped the final decades of China’s dynastic era. Her death marked the end of an era for the Qing Dynasty, which she had navigated through times of both stability and tremendous change. She was honored with burial at the Eastern Qing tombs in Zunhua, where she rests among China’s imperial ancestors.
