Biography

Demosthenes was born on January 1, 383 BCE in Upper Paiania, a region of classical Athens. Throughout his life, he devoted himself to the art of oratory and statecraft, becoming one of ancient Athens’ most influential voices during a pivotal period in Greek history. His career was marked by passionate engagement with the political and civic affairs of his time, earning him recognition as a leading statesman whose words carried weight in the assembly and beyond.

On October 7, 321 BCE, Demosthenes died on the island of Poros, his life cut short by poison. His death marked the end of an era for Athens and the wider Greek world. In recognition of his contributions and the esteem in which he was held, Demosthenes was laid to rest at a tomb within the sanctuary of Poseidon at Kalaureia, a location of profound significance that honored his legacy.

The sanctuary burial ensured that Demosthenes’ memory remained intertwined with one of ancient Greece’s most sacred spaces, a fitting tribute to a man whose voice had shaped the course of Athenian discourse and policy during his lifetime.
