Biography

Claude Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, was born on March 14, 1855, in Chelsea, entering a life defined by distinguished service and family devotion. As a member of the British aristocracy, he carried forward the ancient and honored title of his house, stewarding the responsibilities that accompanied his elevated station.

His legacy is most profoundly felt through his descendants. He was the father of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, whose grace and steadiness would come to define an era of British history. Through her, he became the maternal grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II, connecting his line directly to the modern monarchy. In this way, his influence extended far beyond his own lifetime, shaping the royal family for generations to come.

Claude spent much of his life at Glamis Castle in Angus, the ancestral seat of the Strathmore family. It was there, on November 7, 1944, that he passed away at the age of 89, his death attributed to bronchitis. He was laid to rest in the Burial-Ground at St Fergus’s Church in Glamis, where he remains among his ancestors, a testament to a life lived with purpose and family pride.
