Biography

Christopher of Bavaria was born on February 26, 1416, in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, a region in Bavaria. His life, though brief, positioned him at the center of Scandinavian politics during a transformative period in medieval Europe. In 1442, at the age of twenty-six, Christopher ascended to the throne as king of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden—a remarkable achievement that united three significant Nordic kingdoms under his rule.

Christopher’s reign lasted six years, during which he governed the three Scandinavian kingdoms until his death on January 5, 1448, in Helsingborg. Though his time as monarch was relatively short, his rule represented an important chapter in Nordic history. Upon his passing, Christopher was laid to rest at Roskilde Cathedral in Roskilde Municipality, Denmark, one of the most significant burial sites for Scandinavian royalty. His interment there reflected his status and the reverence afforded to the kings of Denmark during the medieval period.
