Biography

Charlotte of Savoy was born on November 20, 1441, in Chambéry, a city in the Alpine region of what is now France. As a woman of noble lineage from the House of Savoy, she occupied a position of considerable influence within the royal court. Her life spanned the latter part of the medieval period, a time of significant transition in European political and cultural life.

Throughout her years, Charlotte held the distinguished title of Queen of France, a role that placed her at the center of one of Europe’s most powerful kingdoms. As queen, she would have been deeply involved in the social and diplomatic responsibilities expected of her station, supporting the crown and participating in the governance and cultural patronage of the realm.

Charlotte passed away on December 10, 1483, in Amboise, a royal château in the Loire Valley. She was laid to rest in the Basilica of Our Lady in Cléry-Saint-André, a final resting place befitting her rank and significance. Her burial at this important basilica underscored the esteem in which she was held by the French monarchy and nobility at the time of her death.
