Charles VIII was born on July 9, 1470, in the château of Amboise, where he would spend much of his life. He ascended to the throne of France in 1483 and reigned until his death fifteen years later, a period that would prove formative for the French monarchy during the late medieval period.

Throughout his reign, Charles VIII guided France through a transformative era. Though his life was cut short, he left an indelible mark on his kingdom during his years as sovereign. His rule represented a bridge between the medieval and early modern periods of French history.

On April 16, 1498, Charles VIII died at Amboise, the place of his birth, following a stroke. His passing marked the end of an important chapter in French royal history.
