Charles the Child 847 – 866
Biography
Charles the Child was born on January 1, 847, in Frankfurt during a time of significant change across the Frankish realm. As a member of the ruling family, he was destined for authority from his earliest days, ascending to the throne as King of Aquitaine in 855 while still a young boy. His reign, though brief, occurred during a pivotal period in medieval European history when regional kingdoms were consolidating their power and establishing their identities.
Charles’s life was cut short on October 3, 866, when he died in Buzançais at only nineteen years of age. The circumstances surrounding his death remain undocumented in the historical record, leaving many details of his final years unknown. Despite his youth and the brevity of his reign, he left behind a legacy as a ruler of one of the important kingdoms of his era.
Following his passing, Charles was laid to rest in Centre-Val de Loire in what is now metropolitan France, where his memory has been preserved through the centuries. Though his time on earth was relatively short, his position as King of Aquitaine ensured his place in the historical narrative of medieval Europe, representing a generation of young rulers who navigated the complex political landscape of the ninth century.
