Charles III of Naples 1345 – 1386
Biography
Charles III of Naples was born on January 1, 1345, in Corigliano Calabro, a town in the Calabria region of southern Italy. Throughout his life, he would come to hold significant power across two kingdoms, establishing himself as a notable figure in medieval European politics during the latter half of the fourteenth century.
As King of Naples, Charles III ruled from 1345 until his death in 1386, overseeing the kingdom during a complex period of Italian regional dynamics. Beyond his rule in Naples, he also served as King of Hungary, extending his influence across the Mediterranean and into Central Europe. These dual titles reflected the interconnected nature of medieval European nobility and the far-reaching networks of power that defined the era.
Charles III died on February 24, 1386, in Visegrád, a significant royal seat in Hungary. He was laid to rest in Székesfehérvár, also in Hungary, a location of considerable importance in Hungarian royal tradition. His burial in this distinguished location underscores the prominence he had achieved during his lifetime and the respect afforded to his memory by those who succeeded him.
