Biography

Charles Gmelin was born on May 28, 1872, in Krishnanagar, a town in Bengal during the British Raj. He would go on to become a distinguished British athlete, representing his country on the Olympic stage during an era when international athletic competition was still in its formative years. His athletic achievements marked him as one of the notable sportsmen of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Throughout his athletic career, Gmelin competed at the highest levels of British sport, earning recognition as an Olympian during a period when such distinction was rare and deeply meaningful. His participation in Olympic competition reflected both his personal dedication to athletic excellence and the emerging global nature of organized sport during that era.

Gmelin spent his later years in Oxford, one of England’s most distinguished cities, where he passed away on October 12, 1950, at the age of 78. His life spanned nearly eight decades of remarkable change in British society, sport, and the world at large, and his contributions to athletics during his competitive years remained part of Olympic history.
