Biography

Charles François Dumouriez was a French general whose life spanned one of the most transformative periods in European history. Born on January 26, 1739, in Cambrai, he came of age during the twilight of the ancien régime and lived through the upheavals of revolution and war. His military career placed him at the center of momentous events that shaped France and Europe during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Though the details of his life’s work remain to be explored through historical records, Dumouriez’s legacy endured long after his active years. He spent his final years in England, eventually settling in Turville, where he passed away on March 14, 1823, at an advanced age. His remains were laid to rest at Henley-on-Thames in the United Kingdom, a fitting resting place for a man whose life had carried him across borders and through the great currents of his era. Dumouriez thus bridges two worlds—the France of his birth and the England of his refuge—embodying the complex journeys undertaken by many during this remarkable period of history.
