Biography

Charlemagne was born on April 6, 742, in Francia, beginning a life that would reshape the course of European history. As king of the Franks and widely regarded as the first Holy Roman Emperor, he commanded one of the most significant realms of his era, ruling from 747 until his death in 814. His reign spanned decades of transformation, during which he worked to unite and strengthen the vast territories under his control, leaving an indelible mark on the political and cultural landscape of medieval Europe.

On February 1, 814, Charlemagne passed away in Aachen at an advanced age, succumbing to disease after a full life of leadership and accomplishment. His death marked the end of an extraordinary era, yet his legacy would endure for centuries. He was laid to rest with honor in the Palatine Chapel in Aachen, Germany, a fitting final resting place for a ruler of such historic significance. The chapel itself became a sacred monument to his memory, reflecting the profound respect in which he was held by those who knew and served him.
