Biography

Carloman was born on January 1, 710, in Vienne, during a transformative period in Frankish history. He rose to prominence as Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia, a position of considerable power and influence in the early medieval Frankish kingdoms. During his lifetime, he played an important role in the governance and political affairs of Austrasia, one of the major divisions of the Frankish realm.

After more than four decades of life, Carloman passed away on December 8, 754, in his birthplace of Vienne, succumbing to disease. His death marked the end of a significant chapter in Frankish administrative history. In keeping with the religious practices and honors befitting his station, he was interred at the Abbey of Monte Cassino in Cassino, Italy—one of medieval Europe’s most prestigious and spiritually significant monasteries. This burial place reflects both the respect he commanded and the deep Christian faith that characterized his era.
