Carloman of Bavaria

Biography

Carloman of Bavaria was born on January 1, 830, and went on to become a significant ruler of his realm during the ninth century. He ascended to the throne as King of Bavaria in 876, holding this position until 879. During his reign, he navigated the complex political landscape of early medieval Europe, a time marked by shifting alliances and territorial claims among the various kingdoms and their rulers.

Carloman’s reign, though relatively brief, came during a transformative period in European history. As king, he would have faced the considerable challenges of maintaining stability and authority over his domain during an era of significant change. His rule ended in 879, after which he lived for another year in relative obscurity.

On September 26, 880, Carloman died in Altötting, succumbing to a stroke. He was honored with burial in that same town, at Altötting in what is now Bavaria, Germany. His final resting place at this significant religious center reflects the importance of his station and legacy. Though historical records about his personal life remain sparse, Carloman’s role as king placed him among the notable figures of ninth-century Bavarian history.
