Carlo Gesualdo 1566 – 1613
Biography
Carlo Gesualdo was born on March 18, 1566, in Venosa to a family of considerable standing in the Kingdom of Naples. A nobleman of artistic temperament, he devoted himself to musical composition during a period of extraordinary innovation in Renaissance music. His work would eventually gain recognition for its bold harmonic experimentation and emotional intensity, marking him as a significant figure in the history of Western music.
His life was marked by profound turbulence alongside his creative achievements. The contradictions within his character—a man capable of both artistic beauty and terrible violence—have fascinated historians for centuries. These complexities shaped his legacy as much as his musical contributions did, making him a figure of enduring historical interest and debate.
Gesualdo spent his later years in his ancestral town of Gesualdo, where he died on September 8, 1613. The exact circumstances of his death were not recorded, leaving another mystery in a life already shadowed by dramatic events. He was laid to rest at the Gesù Nuovo in Naples, a final resting place befitting his noble station. Today, Gesualdo remains remembered as an artist whose innovations influenced centuries of musical development that followed.
