Byron Raymond “Whizzer” White

United States Supreme Court Associate Justice, Professional Football Player. Born in in Fort Collins, Colorado, he grew up in tiny Wellington, where his father was a lumber dealer and staunch Republican mayor.  White excelled in both academics and athletics.  He graduated first in his high school, college, and law school classes.  His athletic achievements included being the 1938 runner-up for the Heisman Trophy award, the highest-paid player in the NFL, and the NFL’s leading rusher.  Following law school at Yale and service in the Navy, Justice White served as the deputy attorney general in the Kennedy Administration until 1962 when he was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Kennedy.  He was only 44 years old.  Justice White went on to serve for 31 years, one of the longest tenures in Court history.  While on the Court he was mostly aligned with the conservative justices.  He is perhaps best known for dissenting in Roe v. Wade and Miranda v. Arizona.
