Bretislaus II was born on January 1, 1056, in Prague, during a formative period in Bohemian history. He came of age during the medieval era and eventually rose to prominence as a leader of his people. His life spanned forty-four years, during which he witnessed significant developments in Central European politics and culture.

As Duke of Bohemia from 1092 until his death in 1100, Bretislaus II held considerable responsibility for his realm during a pivotal time. His eight-year reign represented an important chapter in the duchy’s governance, though details of his specific accomplishments and challenges remain limited in historical records. His tenure as duke placed him among the significant figures of his era.

On December 22, 1100, Bretislaus II passed away in Zbečno, bringing an end to his life and ducal rule. His death marked the conclusion of his leadership of Bohemia and the transition of power to his successors. The respect shown to him in death reflected his status and importance—he was interred at St. Vitus Cathedral in Hradčany, one of the most sacred and prestigious burial locations in the Czech lands. His resting place at this magnificent cathedral ensured his memory would endure in one of Central Europe’s most significant religious and cultural monuments.
