Augustus III of Poland 1696 – 1763
Biography
Augustus III was born on October 17, 1696, in Dresden, where he would spend much of his life navigating the complex political landscape of eighteenth-century Europe. As both King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, he held titles that reflected his prominent position among European rulers, though his reign coincided with a period of significant territorial and political challenges across the continent.
Throughout his lifetime, Augustus III maintained his base in Dresden, the city of his birth, which served as an important cultural and political center. His dual roles required him to balance the interests of two distinct realms, a task that defined much of his administrative career. He remained engaged in the affairs of both Poland and Saxony until his death on October 5, 1763—just twelve days before what would have been his sixty-seventh birthday.
Augustus III was laid to rest at Dresden Cathedral, his final resting place reflecting his deep connection to the city where his life began and ended. His legacy encompasses a period of European history marked by shifting alliances and dynastic considerations that shaped the continent’s political structure during the mid-eighteenth century.
