Biography

Andrei Tarkovsky was born on April 4, 1932, in Zavrazhye, emerging from humble beginnings to become one of cinema’s most profound voices. Throughout his career, he worked as a film director, screenwriter, and film editor, establishing himself as both a visionary creator and thoughtful theorist of the medium. His talents extended beyond cinema into theatre and opera direction, demonstrating a versatile artistic sensibility that transcended traditional boundaries.

Tarkovsky’s multifaceted career spanned the Soviet and Russian film industries, where he developed a distinctive approach to storytelling and visual language. His work as a theorist further cemented his influence, contributing important ideas about cinema to the broader cultural conversation. He navigated the complexities of working across different artistic disciplines, bringing the same philosophical depth to each endeavor.

On December 29, 1986, Tarkovsky passed away in Paris at the age of 54, succumbing to lung cancer. His final years were spent abroad, away from his homeland, yet his artistic legacy remained deeply rooted in the Russian cultural tradition. He was laid to rest at Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois Russian Cemetery in France, a resting place that reflected his life between worlds—a filmmaker whose vision transcended national boundaries and continues to inspire audiences and artists across generations.
