Alexander II of Russia

Biography

Alexander II of Russia came into the world on April 29, 1818, at the Small Nicholas Palace, destined to lead one of Europe’s great powers. As the twelfth Emperor of Russia, he inherited an empire requiring vision and steady leadership during a period of profound change. His life spanned sixty-three years, during which he navigated the complex demands of his nation and the expectations of his station.

Alexander II’s reign left an indelible mark on Russian history and society. He carried the weight of imperial responsibility throughout his life, making decisions that would echo across generations and affect millions of his subjects. His journey from birth in the palace to his role as emperor reflected the grandeur and gravity of nineteenth-century Russian autocracy.

On March 13, 1881, Alexander II’s life came to an end within the Winter Palace, the seat of imperial power where so much of his reign had unfolded. Following his death from bleeding, he was laid to rest in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Petrogradsky District, Russia, a final resting place befitting his station and historical significance. His memory remains preserved in the annals of Russian history and in the cathedral where he was interred.
