Biography

Born in Morelia on September 27, 1783, Agustín de Iturbide would become a pivotal figure in Mexican history as the nation’s first constitutional emperor. Rising to prominence during a transformative period, he ascended to the throne to lead Mexico through its early years of independence, establishing himself as a central authority during uncertain times.

His reign marked a distinctive chapter in Mexico’s post-colonial era, as he worked to consolidate power and establish constitutional governance. Though his rule was relatively brief, Iturbide’s leadership during Mexico’s formative years left an indelible mark on the young nation’s political development and institutional framework.

On July 19, 1824, Iturbide’s life came to a tragic end in Nueva Villa de Padilla, struck down by gunshot wound. His death signified the close of an era and reflected the turbulent political circumstances that characterized Mexico’s early independence. He was laid to rest at the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral, a final resting place befitting his historical significance and the role he had played in shaping the Mexican nation.
