Biography

Ernst Reuter was born on July 29, 1889, in Aabenraa, a town in what is now southern Denmark. He would go on to become one of the most significant political figures of twentieth-century Berlin, serving as mayor of West Berlin during a pivotal period in the city’s history. His leadership came during years of profound change and challenge for the divided city.

Reuter’s tenure as mayor of West Berlin placed him at the center of Cold War tensions and the struggle to maintain democratic governance in the western sectors of the city. He became a symbol of resistance and resilience during one of history’s most turbulent periods, working to preserve West Berlin’s independence and connection to the West while the city remained surrounded by the Soviet zone.

He remained dedicated to his work until his death on September 29, 1953, in West Berlin. Reuter was laid to rest at Zehlendorf Forest Cemetery in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district, where his grave stands as a reminder of his years of service to the city. His legacy endures as a testament to principled leadership during an era of division and uncertainty.
