Biography

Frederick Lugard was born on January 22, 1858, in Chennai, India, during the height of the British Empire. From his earliest years in that colonial outpost, he was shaped by the world of imperial administration and governance. His life would span nearly nine decades, witnessing profound transformations across the globe and within the British establishment itself.

Lugard’s career was devoted to colonial administration, a profession that defined much of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His expertise and experience in managing distant territories and diverse populations made him a significant figure in British imperial circles. Over his lifetime, he navigated the complex responsibilities of representing Crown interests across multiple territories and cultures.

On April 11, 1945, Lugard passed away in Dorking, England, at the age of eighty-seven. His death marked the end of an era—he had lived through times of dramatic imperial expansion and would not see the profound changes that would reshape the colonial world in the decades immediately following. His legacy remains intertwined with the history of British colonial administration during a transformative period in world history.
