Biography
Friedrich Traun was born on March 29, 1876, in Wandsbek, a community near Hamburg in northern Germany. He came of age during a formative period for tennis in Germany, when the sport was gaining popularity among the middle classes. Little is recorded about his early life, yet his name endured in the annals of German sporting history as a dedicated player of the game.
As a tennis player, Traun participated in the athletic pursuits that defined leisure and competition in late nineteenth-century Germany. Tennis during this era represented both a gentleman’s pastime and an emerging competitive sport, and players like Traun helped establish its roots in German society. The specific tournaments he entered and achievements he attained remain largely undocumented in readily available historical records.
Traun’s life was cut short when he died on July 11, 1908, in Hamburg at the age of thirty-two.
