As the eighth child and sixth son of Tsar Alexander II and Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna, he was born into one of Europe’s most prominent royal families during a transformative period in Russian history. His early life was shaped by the privileges and responsibilities of his imperial rank, and his position within the Romanov dynasty connected him to the great events and transitions that defined nineteenth-century Russia.
