Biography

Kálmán Mikszáth was born on January 16, 1847, in Sklabiná, a small village in Hungary. From humble provincial origins, he would go on to become one of the most significant literary and political figures of nineteenth-century Hungary. His life spanned a transformative period in Hungarian history, during which he contributed substantially to both the nation’s cultural and political development.

Throughout his career, Mikszáth distinguished himself as a writer and engaged actively in public service as a politician. His dual roles allowed him to influence Hungarian society through both the written word and legislative work. He devoted much of his life to these pursuits, earning respect and recognition across both domains.

Mikszáth spent his final years in Budapest, where he died on May 28, 1910. His legacy was honored when he was laid to rest at Fiume Road Graveyard in Budapest. Though the specific details of his death remain undocumented, his life’s work—spanning more than six decades—left an indelible mark on Hungarian literature and public life.
