Biography

Al-Mustanjid lived through a transformative period in medieval Islamic history, spending his entire life in Baghdad, the great capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. Born on January 1, 1116, he witnessed the city’s evolution across more than five decades before his death on January 1, 1170—the very same date that marked his birth, completing a full circle of years.

During the final decade of his life, Al-Mustanjid assumed the role of Abbasid Caliph, serving from 1160 until his passing in 1170. This ten-year period represented a significant chapter in his personal journey and in the governance of the caliphate. His tenure came during a complex era when the Abbasid state faced numerous internal and external challenges, yet he maintained his position in Baghdad, the spiritual and political heart of the Islamic world.

Al-Mustanjid’s life spanned fifty-four years entirely within Baghdad’s walls, making him a true son of the great city. Though specific details of his later years remain limited in historical records, his service as caliph ensured his place in the long succession of Abbasid rulers who shaped Islamic civilization during the medieval period.
