Biography

David Elazar was born on August 27, 1925, in Sarajevo, carrying with him the experiences of a childhood shaped by the interwar Balkans. His life would take him far from his birthplace, leading him to become one of Israel’s most significant military leaders during a defining period in the nation’s history. Elazar dedicated his adult years to service and leadership within the Israel Defense Forces, rising to the position of Chief of Staff—a role of tremendous responsibility and influence during Israel’s formative decades.

Throughout his career, Elazar was instrumental in shaping military strategy and defense policies during crucial years for the young state. His tenure as Chief of Staff placed him at the center of decisions that would affect the security and future of the nation. Though his life was cut short by a heart attack on April 15, 1976, in Jerusalem, his legacy endured through the institutions and practices he helped establish.

Elazar was laid to rest at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, one of Israel’s most honored burial grounds, a final resting place reserved for those who shaped the nation’s destiny. His passing marked the end of a significant chapter in Israel’s military history, yet his contributions to the country’s defense and development remained part of its lasting foundation.
