Emperor Konoe 1139 – 1155
Biography
Emperor Konoe was born on June 23, 1139, in Heian-kyō, the imperial capital of Japan. He ascended to the throne during a significant period in Japanese history, carrying the weight of the imperial office from his youth. His life, though brief, was marked by his role as Emperor of Japan, a position of great ceremonial and political importance during the Heian period.
Emperor Konoe spent his entire life in Heian-kyō, never leaving the imperial capital. He died on August 29, 1155, at just sixteen years of age, ending a reign that had begun in his childhood. His passing marked the close of a brief but notable chapter in Japan’s imperial succession.
Following his death, Emperor Konoe was interred at Anrakuju-in Temple in Fushimi-ku, a sacred resting place befitting his imperial station. Though his time on earth was short, his burial at this venerable temple ensured his memory would be preserved as part of Japan’s rich spiritual and historical heritage. He remains remembered as one of Japan’s young emperors whose reign occurred during the dynamic transformations of the late Heian period.
