Biography

Francis II was born on July 2, 1435, at Château de Clisson, entering a world of medieval nobility and regional power. As Duke of Brittany, he held one of the most significant titles in fifteenth-century France, a position that shaped both his life and legacy. His role as duke placed him at the center of political and social life in his region during a transformative period in European history.

On September 18, 1488, Francis II’s life came to an unexpected end in Couëron when he suffered a fatal fall from his horse. The accident cut short the life of a man who had wielded considerable influence over Breton affairs. His death marked the end of an era for the duchy he had governed.

Francis II was laid to rest at Nantes Cathedral in Nantes, France, a final resting place befitting his rank and station. His burial in the cathedral reflected his importance to Breton society and his enduring connection to the region he led. Though his time was relatively brief by modern standards, Francis II remained a notable figure in the history of Brittany during the late medieval period.
