Nikolay Voronov 1899 – 1968
Biography
Nikolay Voronov was born on May 5, 1899, in Saint Petersburg during a transformative period in Russian history. He would go on to become one of the Soviet Union’s most distinguished military leaders, rising to the rank of Marshal—among the highest honors in the Soviet armed forces. His long career spanned decades of profound change, from the revolutionary upheaval of his youth through the major conflicts that shaped the twentieth century.
Voronov’s life concluded in Moscow on February 28, 1968, at the age of 68. His legacy as a military figure of considerable importance was recognized by the Soviet state in the most solemn way possible: he was laid to rest in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis in the Tverskoy District, a burial site reserved exclusively for leaders and heroes of exceptional national significance. This final honor reflected his standing and contributions to his nation.
The trajectory of Voronov’s life—from his birthplace in Saint Petersburg to his death in Moscow and his interment in one of Russia’s most sacred sites—mirrors the journey of the Soviet state itself. Though many details of his military career remain part of history’s broader narrative, his place among the Soviet Union’s most honored figures endures.
