Biography

John William Friso, Prince of Orange, was born on August 4, 1687, in Dessau, inheriting a position of considerable importance within the Dutch political landscape. His life would be devoted to service as Stadtholder of both Friesland and Groningen, roles that placed him among the influential leaders of the Dutch Golden Age. Though his tenure was marked by the responsibilities of governance during a significant period in European history, his time in these offices was destined to be brief.

On July 14, 1711, at just twenty-three years old, John William Friso’s life came to a tragic and untimely end. He drowned in Moerdijk while still in the prime of his youth, a loss that cut short what might have been a longer tenure in his positions of leadership. His body was laid to rest in Leeuwarden, a final resting place that reflected his deep connection to the northern provinces he had served. Though his years were few, John William Friso remained an important figure in the memory of the Dutch people and the history of the House of Orange.
