Louis II of Naples

Biography

Louis II of Naples was born on October 13, 1377, in Toulouse, France, during a period of significant dynastic complexity in medieval Europe. He would go on to claim and hold the throne of Naples, a kingdom that remained a site of considerable political importance throughout his lifetime. Though born far from his future realm, Louis II’s lineage and claims would ultimately connect him to one of southern Italy’s most prominent noble houses.

Over his forty years of life, Louis II navigated the intricate politics of the late medieval Mediterranean world. His reign as King of Naples reflected the broader struggles and alliances that defined European monarchy during the early fifteenth century. Despite the challenges of his era, he maintained his position and authority throughout his adult life.

Louis II died on May 8, 1417, in Angers, France, at the age of thirty-nine. His remains were interred at Château d’Angers, an important fortress in the Angevin territories. His burial there reflected the deep connections between the French nobility and the kingdoms of southern Italy that characterized his dynasty. Though his reign has faded from common memory, Louis II remains part of the rich tapestry of medieval European monarchy.
