Biography

Charles Haughey was born on September 16, 1925, in Castlebar, beginning a life that would lead him to the highest office of Irish government. Over the course of his political career, he served as Taoiseach—Prime Minister of Ireland—on three separate occasions: from 1979 to 1981, again in 1982, and most substantially from 1987 to 1992. His tenure spanned some of the most significant periods in modern Irish history, during which he navigated complex economic and political challenges facing the nation.

Haughey’s three terms as Taoiseach reflected both his political resilience and the turbulent landscape of Irish politics during the late twentieth century. Each period brought its own demands and opportunities for leadership, shaping his legacy within the country’s political tradition. His career demonstrated the complexities of long-term public service and the shifting fortunes that define political life.

He passed away on June 13, 2006, in Dublin, succumbing to prostate cancer at the age of eighty. Following his death, he was laid to rest at St. Fintan’s Cemetery in Sutton, where he remains remembered as a central figure in Ireland’s political history during a transformative era.
