Anna Magdalena Bach 1701 – 1760
Biography
Anna Magdalena Bach was born on September 22, 1701, in Zeitz, Germany, during a time when musical talent often ran through families and professional musicians held special places in society. She would become known as a skilled singer and an important figure in one of history’s most celebrated musical households. Her life spanned nearly six decades during the Baroque period, a golden age for music across Europe.
In 1721, Anna Magdalena married Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the greatest composers who ever lived. As his second wife, she became a devoted partner in his musical endeavors and household, which eventually included numerous children. She was not merely a supportive spouse but an accomplished musician in her own right, contributing her voice and artistry to the rich cultural environment of their family.
Anna Magdalena spent much of her married life in Leipzig, where Bach held his most prestigious positions. She remained there until her death on February 27, 1760, at fifty-eight years of age. She was laid to rest at Johannisplatz in Leipzig. Though details of her later years are sparse, her legacy endures as part of the Bach family story—a testament to the partnerships that helped create some of the world’s most enduring musical treasures.
