Biography

Orlando Gibbons was born on Christmas Day, 1583, in Oxford, during a golden age of English musical achievement. A gifted composer, virginalist, and organist, he would become one of the most accomplished musicians of his era, contributing significantly to the rich musical heritage of England during the late Renaissance and early Jacobean periods.

Throughout his life, Gibbons dedicated himself to the art of music, mastering both the composition of works and the performance of keyboard instruments. His skills on the virginals—the popular keyboard instrument of the time—and his work as an organist earned him recognition among patrons and fellow musicians alike. His compositions reflected the sophisticated musical tastes of his day and helped shape the English musical tradition.

Gibbons spent the later years of his life in Canterbury, where he eventually passed away on June 5, 1625, at the age of forty-one. His remains were laid to rest in Canterbury Cathedral, a fitting final resting place for a musician of his stature. Though his life was relatively short, Orlando Gibbons left an enduring legacy as one of England’s most respected composers and performers, remembered for his contributions to both sacred and secular music.
