Emperor Xian of Han 181 – 234
Biography
Emperor Xian of Han was born on April 1, 181, in Luoyang, during a period of considerable turbulence within the Han dynasty. He ascended to the throne in 189 and served as Emperor until 220, a reign that spanned three decades of significant political and social upheaval. His time as emperor witnessed the gradual fragmentation of imperial authority and the rise of powerful regional warlords who increasingly challenged central rule.
Throughout his tenure, Emperor Xian faced the enormous challenges of maintaining dynastic stability amid internal conflict and external pressures. Despite the considerable difficulties of his position, he remained a symbol of Han legitimacy during an era when the dynasty’s power was steadily diminishing. His reign ultimately concluded in 220, marking the end of an important chapter in Han imperial history.
Emperor Xian of Han passed away on April 21, 234, at an advanced age. Though the specific circumstances of his death were not recorded for posterity, his life concluded a remarkable journey that had begun fifty-three years earlier in Luoyang. He was laid to rest at the Shanling Mausoleum in Xiuwu County, where his memory has been preserved through the centuries as a significant figure in Chinese imperial heritage.
