Cheoljong of Joseon 1831 – 1863
Biography
Born on June 17, 1831, in Hanseongbu, Cheoljong came to the throne during a transformative period in Korean history. As a member of the Joseon Dynasty, he inherited a kingdom facing significant internal and external pressures. His path to leadership and the circumstances of his reign reflect the complex political landscape of nineteenth-century Korea during a time of considerable change and challenge.
Cheoljong’s reign, though relatively brief, took place amid the dynastic traditions and governance structures that had defined Joseon for centuries. He carried the responsibilities of the crown during a period when Korea was beginning to encounter greater exposure to outside influences and modern forces. Despite the historical importance of his era, Cheoljong’s time as king remained marked by the enduring institutional and cultural frameworks of his predecessors.
On December 8, 1863, Cheoljong passed away at Changdeokgung Palace following a prolonged illness. His death marked the end of a significant chapter in the Joseon Dynasty’s history. He was laid to rest at Yereung in Goyang, South Korea, where his memory remains preserved as part of Korea’s royal heritage and the broader historical record of the nation’s past.
