Biography

Stjepan Filipović was born on January 27, 1916, in the small town of Opuzen, in what was then Yugoslavia. Little is known of his early life, but his name would come to represent the courage of those who resisted occupation during one of Europe’s darkest periods. As a young man, he joined the Yugoslav Partisans, the resistance movement fighting against fascist forces during World War II.

Filipović’s commitment to the Partisan cause ultimately cost him his life. On May 22, 1942, at just 26 years old, he was executed by hanging in Valjevo. His death was one among thousands claimed by the war, yet his memory endured among those who remembered his sacrifice for Yugoslav freedom and independence.

The circumstances surrounding his final days and the location of his burial remain largely undocumented, leaving gaps in the historical record. Nevertheless, Stjepan Filipović remains a figure of remembrance for his service in the Partisan movement during the nation’s struggle for liberation. His brief life exemplified the dedication of an entire generation who gave everything in the fight against tyranny.
