Biography

Charles Martel of Anjou was born on September 22, 1271, in Naples, during a time of considerable dynastic prominence for his family. As a member of the House of Anjou, he was positioned within the political landscape of medieval Europe and held the title of King of Hungary during his lifetime. Though his reign would be cut short, he represented the continuity of Angevin rule across multiple kingdoms during the late thirteenth century.

On August 19, 1295, Charles Martel died in his native Naples at the young age of twenty-three, succumbing to plague—a disease that claimed countless lives throughout the medieval world. His death marked an unexpected end to a life that had held promise of further political influence and achievement. He was laid to rest at Naples Cathedral, a final resting place befitting his royal station and reflecting the deep connection his family maintained to the Kingdom of Naples, the seat of Angevin power in southern Italy.
