Biography

Al-Muktafi was born on January 1, 877, in Baghdad during a period of significant change within the Abbasid Caliphate. He would go on to serve as the seventeenth Abbasid Caliph, holding one of the most influential positions in the Islamic world during the early tenth century. His life spanned the formative decades of the caliphate’s later period, a time marked by both cultural achievement and political complexity.

During his tenure as caliph, Al-Muktafi navigated the responsibilities of leading the vast Abbasid domain from the imperial capital of Baghdad. His position placed him at the center of religious, political, and administrative authority across an extensive realm that stretched across multiple continents and diverse populations.

Al-Muktafi spent his entire life in Baghdad, the city of his birth, where he would also face his final days. He died on August 26, 908, concluding a thirty-one-year life that had been devoted to the high calling of the caliphate. Though the specific circumstances surrounding his death remain unrecorded in historical records, his legacy endured as part of the long and complex history of the Abbasid dynasty, one of Islam’s most consequential imperial powers.
