Biography

Masolino da Panicale was born on January 1, 1383, in the small Tuscan town of Panicale, where he would take his name from. He emerged as a painter during a transformative period in Italian art, working at the threshold between the Late Gothic tradition and the revolutionary innovations of the Renaissance. His career spanned over six decades, during which he witnessed and participated in the gradual shift toward more naturalistic representation and humanistic themes that would define the Renaissance movement.

Throughout his lifetime, Masolino navigated the artistic developments that were reshaping Florence and the broader Italian peninsula. He lived through an era of extraordinary creative ferment, when painters were beginning to explore perspective, anatomical accuracy, and classical themes with renewed intensity. Remaining active in his craft well into his later years, he contributed to the visual culture of early Renaissance Italy during a pivotal moment of artistic evolution.

Masolino da Panicale died on January 1, 1447, in Florence, exactly sixty-four years after his birth. His life spanned one of the most dynamic periods in art history, and he left behind a legacy as an artist who helped bridge the gap between medieval and Renaissance aesthetics.
