Cosima Wagner 1837 – 1930
Biography
Cosima Wagner was born on December 24, 1837, in the Italian town of Bellagio, the daughter of the celebrated Hungarian pianist and composer Franz Liszt. Her early life was shaped by her father’s prominence in European musical circles, providing her with an exceptional education and deep immersion in the world of classical music. This distinguished heritage would profoundly influence her own contributions to the musical world.
Cosima’s life encompassed two significant marriages that connected her to towering figures of nineteenth-century music. She was first married to Hans von Bülow, an accomplished conductor and pianist, before later becoming the wife of Richard Wagner, one of the most influential composers in history. Through her relationships and her own talents as both a musician and administrator, Cosima became an integral part of Wagner’s artistic legacy.
Following Richard Wagner’s death, Cosima devoted herself to preserving and advancing his musical vision, becoming a guardian of his works and ideology. She remained active in cultural and artistic pursuits throughout her long life, living to the remarkable age of ninety-two. Cosima Wagner died on April 1, 1930, in Bayreuth, Germany, where she was laid to rest at Wahnfried, the Wagner family home that became a shrine to the composer’s enduring influence.
