Abbas III 1731 – 1740
Biography
Abbas III was born on January 1, 1731, in Quchan during a transformative period in Persian history. As the first nominal Safavid king, he represented a significant moment in the dynasty’s complex legacy, even as the empire faced profound challenges to its authority and stability during these turbulent years.
His reign, though brief, marked an important chapter in the later Safavid era. Abbas III lived during a time of considerable political upheaval, when the traditional structures of power were being tested and reshaped. Though his role as a nominal ruler meant his actual authority was limited, his position held symbolic importance for those who recognized the Safavid claim to the throne.
Abbas III died on February 1, 1740, in Sabzevar at just nine years of age. His short life ended during a period when the dynasty itself was in its final phases, caught between historical forces that would ultimately transform the region. Though details of his final days remain sparse, Abbas III’s existence reminds us of the many figures whose lives, though brief, carried weight within the grand sweep of history.
