Prince Aimone, 4th Duke of Aosta 1900 – 1948
Biography
Prince Aimone, 4th Duke of Aosta, was born on March 9, 1900, in Turin, Italy, into one of the country’s most distinguished noble families. Throughout his life, he carried the weight and privilege of his aristocratic heritage while serving his nation in the Italian Navy. His dual identity as both a member of the royal house and a military officer shaped his character and responsibilities during a transformative period in European history.
His naval career reflected the traditions of the House of Aosta, a lineage known for generations of service to Italy. As the fourth duke to hold his title, Prince Aimone inherited estates and influence across the Italian peninsula, yet chose to dedicate himself to active duty rather than remain solely in ceremonial roles. This commitment to service defined much of his adult life.
Prince Aimone died on January 29, 1948, in Buenos Aires, far from his native Turin. His final years spent abroad reflected the complex circumstances many European nobility faced in the postwar period. He was laid to rest at the Basilica of Superga in Turin, among the honored dead of his distinguished family, returning home for his eternal rest in the city where his story began.
