Biography

Crispus was born on January 1, 303, in Pula, a significant port city of the Roman Empire. As the son of the emperor Constantine I, he was raised during a pivotal era in Roman history, when the empire was undergoing profound transformation under his father’s reign.

In 317, at a young age, Crispus was elevated to the position of caesar, a title designating him as an imperial heir and co-ruler. This appointment reflected his father’s confidence in his abilities and his expected role in the future governance of Rome. During his tenure as caesar, Crispus would have participated in the affairs of state during a time of significant political and military importance.

On January 1, 326—exactly twenty-three years after his birth—Crispus died in his native city of Pula. His death came under circumstances that marked a tragic end to a young life of considerable promise. Though his time in power was cut short, his brief tenure as caesar remains part of the complex legacy of Constantine’s reign and the transformations that shaped the Roman Empire’s future.
