Biography

Ramón Mercader was born on February 7, 1913, in Barcelona, Spain. His life would become defined by his work as an agent for the NKVD, the Soviet secret police, during a pivotal era of twentieth-century history. Though born into a world of political upheaval, Mercader’s path led him to become a central figure in one of history’s most consequential political assassinations.

On August 20, 1940, Mercader carried out an act that would forever mark his place in historical record: the murder of Leon Trotsky in Mexico City. This event sealed Mercader’s legacy as an instrument of Soviet policy during Stalin’s reign. The decades that followed saw him navigate a complex existence, having become a man whose name was inseparable from this singular, momentous act.

Mercader spent his final years in Havana, where he died on October 18, 1978, from lung cancer at the age of sixty-five. His remains were interred at Kuntsevo Cemetery in the Mozhaysky District of Russia, a final resting place far from his native Barcelona. Mercader’s life remains a sobering chapter in the history of twentieth-century political violence and the reach of authoritarian power.
