Maria Luisa of Spain 1745 – 1792
Biography
Maria Luisa of Spain was born on November 24, 1745, in Portici, Italy, during a period of significant change across European royal courts. Her life would come to span the transformative final decades of the eighteenth century, a time when the foundations of the old European order were beginning to shift. From her birth in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies to her later life in Central Europe, Maria Luisa navigated the complex networks of dynastic marriage and court politics that defined her era.
Through her marriage, Maria Luisa became Empress Consort of the Holy Roman Empire, elevating her role from princess to one of the highest positions in European society. Her position at the imperial court placed her at the heart of one of Europe’s most powerful and culturally influential institutions during the final years of its existence.
Maria Luisa died in Vienna on May 15, 1792, at the age of forty-six. Her final resting place was the Imperial Crypt in Vienna, Austria—the traditional burial ground for members of the imperial family. In death, as in life, she remained connected to the grand history of the Habsburg dynasty and the empire she had served as its consort.
