Biography
Abbas I of Egypt was born on January 1, 1813, in the holy city of Jeddah, situated along the Red Sea coast. He came into the world during a transformative period in Egyptian history, when the region was navigating significant political and social changes. His early years were shaped by the complex dynamics of the Ottoman Empire and the emerging modernization efforts that would define much of the nineteenth century.
In 1848, Abbas I assumed the position of Wāli of Egypt, taking on the responsibility of governing the region during a pivotal era. His tenure lasted six years, until his death on July 13, 1854, in Benha. During his time in office, he oversaw Egypt during a period of considerable change and challenge, carrying forward the administrative and developmental initiatives of his predecessors while responding to the needs of his realm.
Abbas I’s life, though relatively brief, spanned a remarkable moment in Egyptian and Middle Eastern history. From his birth in Jeddah to his death in the Nile Delta town of Benha, his years reflected the broader transformations taking place across the region. Though details of his final years remain sparse in historical records, his governorship left an imprint on Egypt’s trajectory during the nineteenth century.
